Badtux the Snarky Penguin

In a time of chimpanzees, I was a penguin.

Chortling on a dead man's grave

So the Freepi are chortling that Chief Justice Rheinquist passed away. I don't get it. Why are people gloating about the death of a human being? Is it really appropriate to chortle because a man has died?

Some people are just shameless.

I especially don't get why they're chuckling about him. I mean, this is the guy who voted Bush into the White House and presided over the Clinton impeachment proceedings. He's the guy who oversaw the hardest right turn the Supreme Court has had in the last 50 years. You'd think he'd be a hero to them.

My speculation is that they're chortling not so much over Rehnquist's death itself but over the timing of it -- it takes away some of the news coverage of Bush's fucking up the New Orleans disaster.

I'll chortle my motherfucking ass off when they put the Chimp in the ground.

They're chuckling because now Roberts, as the chief justice nominee, can be the more moderate of the two replacements Bush gets to nominate.

And he'll be chief justice for 30 more years. Things aren't looking too good right now - let's hope for a good long fillibuster from the Democrats.

If, you know, they can grow a spine or something.

I don't get it, either. Unless they're just a bunch of delirious sadists who seem to have forgotten that there's a lot fewer of them around than they'd have the rest of us believe. Sort of a "strength in numbers" effect, only blown out of proportion by the horrors coming out of New Orleans every minute...

It's also because Rehnquist was aged and sick. He probably didn't do as many of his Supreme Courtly duties and passed some off to others, perhaps. Now, "king of vacations" can put two in. This gives them a large edge in getting rid of abortion rights, and most likely, rights to minorities. It will also, most likely, keep any gay rights that might be brought up, from being passed.
